JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS 2005 ROSTER – 12/01/2005

I'm keeping this updated roster and cap estimate somewhere on the board at all times. Return to this post (if it's buried, just search for a lesser known player) anytime you want to see what the latest roster and salary cap figure looks like, as I edit it often.

With Stroud’s, Garrard’s, Darius’, and Mathis’ contracts extended, and with Fletcher and Alexis re-signed, the Jaguars are estimated at $1.27 mil under an estimated $91.05 mil adjusted cap for the Jaguars (includes $2.63 mil in estimated LTBEs). The league salary cap is estimated to be $85.5 mil, but the Jaguars get to add another $5.55 mil to their cap given 2004 incentives results.

Upon activating Roberson and Alexis while placing Sorensen and Winborn on IR, the Jaguars roster consists of 53 signed players, 8 players on IR, and 8 players on the Practice Squad. October saw the Jaguars trade for Winborn and release Chase. Late in September Chad Owens was released (signed to Practice Squad), Fletcher and Chase were re-signed, and Darius was placed on IR. Tracy White signed and Cordova and Yoder were placed on IR days after the final cutdown that saw David Allen, Alexis, Chase, Davis, Fletcher, Fu, Hand, Kight, McClain, Romberg, Tate, Bernard Thomas, Kiwi Thomas, Thompson, Wayne, Tony Williams and Wood hit the waiver wire. McClain resigned and Cole was waived within two days after placing Brent Smith on IR and waiving Economos, Favors, Eddie Johnson, Marler, Roberson, and Webb in the cutdown to 65.The team released Edwards the day after waiving Brian Allen, Allmond, Compton, Hill, Hybl, McClain, Osika, and Ransom. In the latter half of August the Jaguars signed Kahlil Hill and Brian Allen, placed Jason Mitchell and Ray Perryman on IR, and waived James Kinney. The first two weeks of August saw Matt Jones, Craig Osika, and Jimmy McClain sign as Julius Franklin and Jamar Enzor were waived. Chad Owens, Alvin Pearman and Khalif Barnes signed in the final week of July, and Scott Starks, Gerald Sensabaugh, and Pat Thomas all signed in the first couple weeks of July. Late June saw the signing of Roberson and Kight with Johnson replacing Brader as the backup Punter. Wayne, Brader, Franklin, and Wood were signed, and L.V. Hill, Neal Philpot, and Huey Whittaker were released, in early June. Late in April, the Jaguars signed Stroud and Garrard to contract extensions, saw Ayodele sign his RFA tender, drafted 8 rookies (Barnes, Jones, Owens, Pearman, Roberson, Sensabaugh, Starks, and P. Thomas), signed 11 undrafted free agent rookies (Connolly, Davis, Economos, Enzor, Hill, Kinney, Mitchell, Philpot, B. Thomas, Webb, and Wimbush), and released Sammy Williams and Brandon Green. Early in April, the team inked Tony Williams and Kenny Wright, saw David Allen sign his EFA tender, and waived Lionel Barnes. In late March the Jaguars signed Marcellus Wiley and waived Tommy Hendricks. Fuamatu-Ma’afala and Troy Edwards re-signed and Deke Cooper signed his RFA tender a week after Cousin and Quinn Gray signed. Romberg, Nate Hybl and Hayward were signed at the start of free agency with Washington, Bolden, and Marc Edwards released soon after. Chase, Zelenka, Ransom and Darius signed the week before free agency began. The Jaguars signed Brent Smith and re-signed Gilbert, Perryman and S. Williams weeks after signing Chris Cole and re-signing Sorensen. The team signed five of their Practice Squad players--Alexis, Allmond, Hand, Tate, and Whittaker--at the start of the offseason.

Position designations are being updated according to Preseason line-ups. The notation "R" simply means that the player is either a draft pick or is earning the rookie minimum salary. Players allocated to NFL Europe have their team in parentheses (two other players, likely established starters, also carry exemptions)…

Compensatory Draft Pick Consideration

The basic formula for determining how many compensatory draft picks the NFL gives each team is to take the amount of "UFA's lost" (on another team's roster) and then subtract the amount of "UFA's gained," although the formula is highly dependent on contract values and factors in playing time and postseason honors.

The Jaguars "UFAs lost" from 2003 were 6 (Wade, P. Johnson, Shaw, Fordham, Rainer, and Mack). Wiegert didn’t count given rules about the nature of his restructuring. The "UFAs gained" were 5 (Peterson, Douglas, K. Mitchell, Edwards, and Trapp). Lewis, Stokes, and Hatchette do not count as "true UFAs" while Nesbit's contract was too small to be considered.

The 5 UFAs gained cancelled out Wade, Johnson, Shaw, Rainer, and Fordham, leaving only Mack to get compensated for. So, in all, the Jaguars received one seventh round compensatory pick in 2004.

For 2005, the UFAs lost last year were Fernando Bryant, Danny Clark, Jamar Nesbit, and Leander Jordan. Bryant was the best bet towards getting any possible compensation since he signed a huge contract and started every game barring injury. The UFAs gained were Deon Grant, Greg Favors, Juran Bolden, Tommy Hendricks, and Todd Yoder. That’s 5 UFAs gained and only 4 lost, which in the end meant that the Jaguars did not get any compensation.

The Jaguars won’t get any compensation for the 2006 draft because Bob Whitfield is the only UFA they lost.
